A Summary of 2005
Although I didn't fish as much as usual, (job comitments and gas prices) it was still one of the best seasons I've had. We started out in Wilson for the spring LOC Derby. We had a couple rough days but we found fish right out in front of Wilson and we had limit catches by 9am. The rest of the day was a fun catch and release day. We hit Mexico Bay once in June but the lake was rough and one of my friends was sick. We did manage a few Browns and there were marks all over the place and it looked like the summer would be good. Later (July) we started hitting the waters off Oswego and they produced good Kings from 300-600fow. Spoons run off the riggers and off the Dipseys were hot. Flasher/flies were also hot for me. The thermalcline was moving all the time. We caught fish at times from 50ft down and other times they would be down as deep as 140ft. Not unusual for the eastern end of Lake Ontario. With the Kings being deep that pretty much shut down Mexico Bay. That's why Oswego was so good last year. Unforunately I didn't get back until August for some more King fishing. I went for 5 days at the end of August and I ended up spending 3 of them playing golf. That lake was just plain mad at the world as it raged for days. All those hurricanes that turn in to low pressure systems and then run over the top of Lake Ontario really mess things up. When we did finally get out it was a blood bath. With tons of kings coming in for the spawning runs and no one being able to get out and fish for them they were unpressured and willing to bite. We had a 14 fish day (2 of us on the boat) and then another 6 fish dy by 11am. One was our 2nd place LOC Derby King. That was it for me. However my father made it back up for a day in mid September and managed 7 Kings by noon. Hopefully this year will allow me more time to fish. But if not, I hope what time I get there is as good as last year.
