Report: Fished the upper river when we first arrived, not much. Checked out South Sandy, North Sandy, Little Sandy Creek(locals plucked that dry),Orwell we found a bunch of fish and had fun. Went to DSR for the last 2 days. Worked hard at the flats and Joss Hole but caught some large and fresh fish. Most movement early morning then most fish going back down. My buddies went to the Black hole and the wall and did poorly.Staircase had no action at all. It was raining on Friday when we left. This is much needed. If they get enough rain a large amount of fish should come up. Watch the weather reports.

My dad lost a Brown.
My dad caught a nice Coho in the S.R..
I caught Kings only & had alot of hookups.
Guys were doing pretty good on the crazy eggs.
I was flyfishing.
Saw the lifters @ the wall (oswego). Where the heck is the warden? Seens like they all do it.
People @ dam fishing fair & catching fish.
Town pool @ S.R.- people lifting on that wall as well. Disgusting to watch. People on the bank side fishing fair.
Fish spread out, but they were there- and Big!
Fun times.
Buy stuff @ Yankee fly shop in Pulaski & they will put you on the fish.

Report: Fished Thursday on the lower end on the river (above the DSR) and was blessed with small but consistent pods of fish. Hook-ups were plentiful with fresh coho's, kings and browns mixed in.

Friday the action slowed down on the lower end with and decided to move around a bit... Fishing turned to hunting and found myself working very hard to find fish. Friday ended with only a few kings, two beautiful coho's and one 13 lb brown trout.

Saturday was the toughest day by far... Only place I managed to hook fish was at the saxton falls.

Drove to Oswego and saw the ripping fest.... This is an embarrassment to the fishery!

Sunday picked up alittle late morning about a 4.
Overall fishing was very slow and had to really work at them.
I went 6 for 8 on Sunday, while going 3 for 5 on Sat.
Mind you I fished all day on Sat.
Sunday I caught all fish in a 1.5 hr span 10am to 11:30. The rain they predicted never happen.
I'll be back up next week doing my rain dance in hopes of a good soaking and good fishing.

Report: The "early" salmon run did not happen this year. As of 9/25/2006 only a very few fish have migrated out of the deep water below the Rt 104 bridge and Mexico Point. The water depth goes "shallow" near the Rt 16 bridge and all the rest of the way upriver. Local reports state there are large numbers of salmonids holding in the deeper water near Mexico Point and are "waiting". Some have darkened, but a few are still bright. River fishing is poor to non-existent so far.

Report: Took a quick trip up yesterday. A few browns and steelys in the middle black hole in the AM, a couple of decent spurts of salmon in the PM. No great numbers, but very most of the king were in the 25lb class. Rumors of a tremendous amount of fish holding in the estuary. When they come, it should be a good run. Won't even speculate on when they will move, as nobody really knows......

Report: Let me start by saying thanks to the group from Oneanta for helping make this weekend a good time. The venison, beers, - thanks...
Fished the Salmon all weekend, so don't know how Oswego was - although I would imagine with the high water the fishing would continue to be good.
The rain held off for most of the weekend; cloudy with some showers at times (pouring out now). Lots of people, but fish dispersed throughout the river. Not a lot of fresh fish came up, so most of the fish were holdovers - mostly Cohos - although I did catch a couple of nice kings in the mix. As expected, the water was low, add in the people and no thick "pods"of fish made for fewer hookups than normal for this time of year, but the best fishing so far. Lots of fish in the estuary still, so good fishig should continue..... Pat Mahoney said that a couple of you came in and bought some of his flies that I was talking about last week...Would like to know if anyone did anything with them - I used them throughout the weekend - oh yea....
Will let you know what's going throughout the week....

Report: It would seem the rain has been controlling the fish the past couple of weeks. Last Tues. and wed. was great during and after the rain, with a big run of Cohoes. The end of the week and weekend was crap. Didn't fish Monday or Tuesday, but fished with the rain (heavy at times) Wednesday and Thursday. Did very good with many kings (seems the kings are dominating this week). The rain let up this afternoon (Thurs.), and the fishing continued to be fantastic! Many kings; some "mudpuppies" and "great whites" lurking around (half dead salmon). Even caught a small bass and a bunch of fallfish. If you are into fly fishing, stop up to Pat Mahoney's in Altmar and ask him for a couple of his egg sack imitations. Be sure to tell him BillySparks sent ya; these are great -- everything will hit them! Looks like rain for the whole weekend, hope this will keep the crowds down, but probably won't. Going to be a crowded weekend, although I will be into fish either way...Listen for the wise ass Canadian "My fish, it is coming up!!!" If he has a sparks in his hand and looks a little tipsy, most likely me. You know us damn redneck upstaters....

Good luck.

Report: Fished the 2A Bridge Pool at dawn for two hours. No takers but I observed approx. 40- 50 cohos coming up from the riffs below. Went up to Altmar & fished the LFZ and below the bridge down to Schoolhouse from 10am to 2pm. Caught a 27" steelhead (no fin clips)at the bridge on a #8 olive conehead wooly bugger. I could see small groups of cohos moving up but couldn't get any to hit. Diffinately some salmon in the LFZ now.

Report: A mother lode of fish left the estuary this afternoon. It was another slow morning at the DSR with everyone wondering when things were going to start happening. It rained pretty hard all morning which stained the water some. Then about 1pm the run started. There were fish everywhere, cohos & kings about equally mixed if my catch is any indication. I also caught a nice brown to add to the mix. All afternoon it was a constant parade of fish which was still going on as we had to leave. If you can, I'd get up here ASAP.

Report: did the week ender to oswego. River was flowing over the dam so it looks good for the fall run. there was some fish in the tubine discharge so the action for the guys on the wall was regular hook ups at times with a lot of waiting mixed in. The dam had some browns and steelhead,no monsters...I fished the dam all day Satuday and there was very few hook ups on salmon. the flow out of the pipe was roaring out all openings so crossing the river was ruff with you had to walk to the center with water waiste deep to get to the rocks. most of the fishing was on the land side of the discharge and maybe room for 5 guys to fish and with no fish it ends up with 20 guys.wish for the weather to cool and for that discharge pipe to be shut back for safety. Report: Fishing the Oswego mostly lately. Been doing good with a lot of kings and one good sized brown. The fishing around the dam has been slow but is picking up. Most of the fish have been caught down by the wall. The water level has been decent; still above average for this time of year. The Salmon River is very low due to the work on the dam (lowest allowable flow this time of year is 335 cfs; currently 185 cfs) and this has caused the fish to hold in the estuary. Some fish have entered the river the past couple of days, and you can see a lot of fish off the bridge in Port Ontario. A bunch of fish are at the hatchery, and some browns and stellies can be seen in the lower fly zone (opens Friday the 15th). I fished the upper trestle pool this afternoon - couple of small trout. Thought some of the fish that have been coming in might of moved up. Heard good reports from the black hole and douglaston. We are supposed to get rain tonight, hope so - should bring in some fish... Will fish again before the weekend and let you know.....

Report: Basically fished from the Wall Hole to the High Banks. Water was low....about 350cfs....of course today Monday, it has dropped to just over 200cfs (Pineville Gauge). Started at 8am....finished up at 3pm. I tried a little of everything....but no luck....

Saw a few fish move through in the run between the Wall Hole and Island....2-3 hook-ups. I saw about 4 fish enter the run just below the Island.

Next Stop...Joss Hole.....sat up on the hill and with the sun, I could see everything. No Salmon were spotted....lots of Fall Fish...even a couple of bass....could have been a few small Atlantics...just wasn't close enough.

From here...worked up to the Spring Hole....Saw one hook-up...but fairly quit...only a couple of people. Next Stop....The Clay Hole....3 guys fishing it hard....they saw a few fish move through in the AM.....caught a small brown.

From here I walked up through the Meadow.....saw one fish show it's back...two people were fishing but I did not see them hook-up. Worked my way up through the Bus Hole side of the Island....(typically the side not too many fish move through in low water)

Next stop Lower Clay.....saw one fish move through but that was it...met a fisherman that was there all morning, he said a pod of fish came just about to Lower Clay first thnig in the AM...splashing around. He landed a small steelhead and brown. The fish milled around and as the sun came up they headed back to the estuary.

We fished the High Banks and all the way to the tip of the last island hard for two hours...more site fishing than anything else.....saw a few fish show their backs near the far end of High Banks then back into the estuary. As far as we could see....from 12:30-2:30pm....no fish passed us on the High Banks side. From our vantage point, we could see 4 boats just beyond the end (tip of the island) of High Banks and they werre hammering them,.....one after a another. It was loaded. They were fishing just into the drop-off before the water gets shallow into the run. I did see one smaller fish breaking the surface a few times...it was a small steelie..about 4-5 pounds.....tired....I revived him and he swam back towards the lake.

Overall....loads of fish at the bridge/estuary.....They move a bit at night and first thing in the AM...but are still VERY relunctant to make their final move in.

Report: I belive there is some truth to what "washhog* says. Appologies to all offeneded.
There are a few Coho's entering the river. They do not seem to be holding. Shooting up River as is usually the case @ this stage of the game.
A few kings are being caught, but most are holding in the estuary waiting for the right time. water temp. must be considered.
Also we need to get the river up.
I hear some nice browns are being caught as well.

Report: I had to go back to Sept. 5th to find someone who actually reported on if there were salmon in the river or not. I thought this was a place to discuss fishing reports. Instead I have to weed thru all the reports of everyone cying about how someone else chooses to fish. I also find much gratification in getting a fish to strike my presentation, but it is not my place to tell someone else how they should do it. Some people like to shoot things at 300 Yrds. Some like to use a Bow. to each his own. Stick to the facts. Has anyone seen any salmon in the river yet. Thanks.

Report: Glad to see those who are assisting the uneducated. As a 18 yr veteran of Salmon River, there is nothing more frustrating than "snaggers". My advise for first timers and novices, observe before fishing. Take an hour out of your day to observe and learn by example, it won't be hard to determine who the real fisherman are. Medium strength line, and the correct leader is my ticket to success on the SR.

Anyone have a current Salmon River report? I won't make it up there until next weekend.

Report: Amen! Nice to see there are some other "anglers" out there. I have advice to all who want to learn- all you really need to do is research on this web site in the angler library. There is enough info. in there to give anyone a basic knowledge on Salmon, Steelhead & Brown Trout fishing in the Great Lakes & Tribs.. Bait, Spin & Fly Fishing are all covered. It isn't rocket science, but can be a little bit intimmidating. We all want to catch fish. You have to resist the temptation to snag this huge fish in front of you. Hard to do when everyone else seems to be doing it, but I assure you they san be caught fairly.
Peer preasure is tough. My advice is watch the snaggers & think about what jerks they are. They probably go home & tell thier kids & friends how great of a sportsman they are. A sportsman doesn't dishonor his prey, or himself by foul play.
Please feel free to email me for advice as well.

Report: My previous post of a question "what is heaving" was intended to confirm what I suspected it was. My response to anyone "heaving" is that you all hurt our sport and our world!!! The idea that salmon CAN'T be caught by any other means is nonsense. I have caught numerous kings in the salmon river that took the fly by mouth. For the gentleman wondering how, please email me and I will give you the tactics that work for me. I can not even put into words how angry it makes me to see snaggers though. You hicks should stick to shooting each other while you're out "hunting" (or maybe "drinking" would be more accurate).

I was also informed you could only keep them if it was a good hook (mouth, head) So now you say that lifting, heaving is wrong. please tell me how you catch them so i can be a better fisherman i am returning in 2 weeks to the same location and i would like to fish "THE RIGHT WAY"

Report: To the "Heavers" out there. If you aren't skilled enough to Legally catch a fish take the time to learn from a fisherman. There are plenty out there that will help you out!
Do not dishonor yourself & a fish by snagging.
There is no shame in leaving a fish alone if it can't be enticed into striking. After all do you think about eating when you're ready for some love? Please respect the fish & each other. Earn it- the feeling is wonderful!

Report: heaving is a sarcastic joke for foul hooking fish which is pretty much what you see everyone doing up there for salmon.A long swift drift from 10 to 1 o clock and yank back works great!

Report: There are quite a few Kings in the river.Mostly at the wall not the dam got into quite a few fish but these fresh fish are tough to land so i'd fish there instead of wasting your time and money at DoougieTown.Bait(Egg sacks and lots of heaving.)So dedicated lifters break the rods out.

Report: Fished the DSR Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Rained steadily Saturday afternoon and evening, and some after dark. No fish Saturday. Did not see any kings; just several reports of a lone fish spotted. Saw one small steelhead caught.

We were hoping the rain from the hurricane remanants would trigger something Sunday morning, but no luck. At daybreak, just a bunch of anglers sitting on rocks or standing in the water hoping to see something moving. By 11 a.m., we and most others called it a day. Not a single king seen and not a single report of anyone hooking one (or even seeing one). The rain had no noticable impact on the water flow or clarity.

They are coming, but they aren't here yet ...
