Report: Got in the river at 6am and it was already packed with fisherman shoulder to shoulder. The fishing was very good today with many Kings and Cohos taken. I have two suggestions for my fellow fisherman on the river now that the river is packed with people. 1) If someone has to leave their spot to go fight a fish please let them have their spot back when they get back from the fight. 2) Try to time your casts with the people on your left and right so that you are in a nice rhythm, this way you will not get tangled. Most of the poeple today were great though and even though it was crowded it was a good atmosphere. My son landed a 40 inch King and had another King strip off all his line. FISH ON!

Report:
Sorry Darryl for not giving you a call. I ran up to the SR on a whim. The fishing was still real good compared to last week when we were up. Hooked up 35 plus salmon (a very good percentage hooked in the mouth) and landed a bunch. Also hooked up two steelie's-landed one. Both about 6-9 pounds. The fishing was steady throughout the day. A nice steady flow of fish moving through the river during the day. Fishing pressure was also good. Three guys did try to push me out of my spot, but eventually moved on. Most of the people on the river were great. Moving when you hooked up with a fish that ran you up or down the river and even willing to net your fish if it came to that. Overall, great fishing and great people on the river.

Report: Thanks for the kind words Bernie. I feel the same. Jeremy went yesterday with friends after school and caught his limit. He actually hooked into a lamprey that was sucking on a King and fought the King via the lamprey. The lamprey finally let go and he reeled in the lamprey. He said that really grossed him out. Maybe I will see you this weekend. Not sure when I will be up. Take Care, Jeff

Report: First I want to say hi to my buddy "8wt", this is Jeff (eagleclaw) who fished next to you on Saturday 9/17. Thanks for all the sinkers. I took off work Tuesday with a buddy and boy am I glad I did. We fished from 7:30am until 6:00pm and we had "fish on" the entire day. I have never seen so much action there. I had them coming up 6 at a time running hard. I saw a nice steelhead landed by a first timer to the river. I landed several Kings and one beautiful silver Coho (my first Coho). It fought like the dickens. My buddy landed a monster 23 Lb King among several others. He even caught the same fish twice (we could tell from a scar on the fish). It was a great day.

Report: We fished between the Staircase and the Short Bridge late Friday afternoon 16 Sept from 1500 til dusk. Saw about 12 fish on by others. Fishing Pressure was light and the rain was heavy. I caught and released 2 and Bro-in-law caught and released 6 Kings. Saturday the 17th first light til 1900 was non-stop action, including two small Brown's @ Staircase pool (#10 fuzzy ugly brown hares ear mutant pheasant tail) and 2 Kings upstream in the suds on a #4 orange cyberclone estaz egg w/silver flash). Bro-in-law had one of his best EVER King days on the river(single blue egg). Heavy fishing pressure and a lot of fish taken by others. Sunday the 17th I saw 2 hook-ups from sun up until noon and 2 fresh fish with the their tail fin in high gear going up stream like the blazes. I had no success fooling any fish to bite. Bro-in-law had two on...using single blue egg...neither landed.

Report: 9/17/05 Salmon River, Pulaski, NY. Reports and Ramblings:
Today was one of those very rare days where I actually got to go out and fish one of my favorite early season spots for Steelhead. Very lil weight, didn't tap bottom once, (they really move for it at this time of year, unlike those winter steelies) big Oregon Cheese glow bug (imitating a King Salmon Egg), rapids and pocket water. (Thats where the Steel is at during this time of year and water temperatures. They call it the "heat") This water also supplies them with a safe feeling. No one hardly ever fish's this water so I knew what chrome was hold'n would not have been pressured. Several cast's into the bubbles and my goal was achieved. A nice bright silver metalhead! Ye-haa. This water "heat" or rapids can and should be fished exactly like you do for your trout while fly fishing. With or without a strike indicator. To many boulders-snags to tap bottom
With rain, drizzle and the accompanying low light I noticed salmon on the move all afternoon. It would have been very easy if it was your first time on the river to know where to fish for them. You just had to look for the splash's up and down the river (their route) and then key in on the pockets they were staging in before there next rooster tail up to the next pocket. Fish the pockets inbetween the rocks. Must have been some dumb ones in the bunch because even I caught a couple.:) Lots of folks out enjoying the fishing, but I was not in line. I did what I tend to suggest to get away from the crowds to find some peace and tranquility on my few and far between fishing hours. Found some unpressured fish and it felt like I was in the wilds of some far off land.
Walked over to a hole that I have fished little and have had lil personal success in. But, it had all the ear marks of a good spot that could help me earn a living. I never really put the time in to learn the hole within the hole (hint) All I could ever find were the snags. :)
Today I put the time in, found the hole within the hole and in about 2 hours I got to enjoy playing with about 10 Salmon. Ye-haa. maybe Ill try to get away for a few tomorrow before I go back to work. This hole had a good number of salmon in it with no one around? Hmmm.
The best part about this once foreign hole was the hole within the hole also had an incredible seam (where the fast water meets the slow water, looks like a line and or seam) It had an added bonus of very deep water. This means it will hold fish during the brightest, sunniest part of the day. Any and all fish that run up the river will be hard pressed to leave it. Add in that this spot hardly ever gets fished and its a spot I can return anytime and hopefully hit some fish. Its almost impossible to fish the hole from the other side so it makes it even nicer knowing that there will be very few if any anglers across from you increasing the odds of more tangles or fish accidentally getting broken off by the unobservant angler.
This spot had 3 current breaks working for it that the fish use to rest and or stage before their next push.
1. Hole within the hole. (notice how many times I've mentioned this?)
2. Seam
3. The tail (many anglers do not consider or think of the tail of the hole as a current break.) This is one of the most popular area's on the river where you can always find fish. But, the best is when there is a hole in the tail.
To sum it all up. The more current breaks a spot has, the better the spot. The more current breaks concentrated in one spot in the hole makes it an even better location to fish. Only through a thorough study of the contour of the bottom in conjunction with the currents and their friendly seams and or current breaks will the secret's of where the most fish are at be unlocked.
Heard the lower end was pretty slow today. Hmmm. Estuary has a bunch, matter of time they say.
Best Fish's,
Randy Jones

Report: Made a day trip up to the river today with a buddy of mine. Fished from sun up to about 2:30. The fishing was amazing. Hooked up too many fish to even try to count and landed a bunch. Fishing in the early morning was almost too hot to handle and stayed strong all day. Neither of us went more than fifteen minutes without a hook up the entire day. A banner day for the Salmon River.
Good luck to everyone else.

Report: Made my first trip to your beautiful area.

Nice river.

Caught a nice female Brown trout on a wooly
bugger on Saturday morning at 2A.

Majority of the fish were between the Tressle hole and the Sportsman's hole.

Saw a few fish off the bridge below the lower
fly zone.

The Majority of the snaggers were at
the tressle hole. So many snaggers that if you
tried to actually fish they got mad.

Saturday night,I sat on the hill on the North
side of the tressle hole and just watched.
My brother made video because we were amazed.
Snag, snag, snag.

There were two guys in particular who had it
down pat. Cast out, drop the tip so it sinks,
then rip!!!
I watched one guy snag 14 fish.
Only landed 2, but he was snagging it up.

Saw another guy hell, screaming and go crazy
over a small brown trout. You would have thought
he caught a new state record the way he carried
on.

Sunday at daybreak, I hooked two Kings with the
wooly bugger. Then the snaggers pushed me out
of the hole. Literally couldn't cast my fly rod
without hitting someone.
Guess they thought that was the only place in the river where there were fish.

I hope all the snaggers get to have personal
face to face meeting with law enforcement
officer. Minus them, and it was an enjoyable
weekend.

Seen two good looking browns caught and saw tons of fish heading upstream with the high clear sun. Get up to the river before they shut down the water, its worth the gas money.

Report: That is what i dont understand and find hard to believe. Fishing for salmon in New York state and going 6 for 6 and being the least bit upset about it, on Labor day weekend no less just sounds ludicrous and selfish. The weather was great this weekend and the water was warm, but the fish were fresh and powerful. As far as going belly up, the fish that i seen floating had hooks in their stomachs. Im am sorry i dont hang out with pros like people who fish the river , but me and my fishin buddies do all right for ourselves an more importantly have a great time doing it no matter how many fish we hook. If anyone agrees with me just know the fish are in, get the beers cold.

Report: Saw a few fish, many more then usual for this time of year. Was on vacay for long weekend with family so really did not fish hard or long.
Fished 1 hour on Sat. and went 1 for 3.
Fished 2 hours on Sunday and went 6 for 6.
Saw fish on stringers and few hookups.
The fight in these fish was very disappointing, I used 8 lb. and fish did not have strength or energy to break off, 1 good run upriver and then they would float back down belly up. I kept 1 for a friend that was camping with me.
The #'s of fish are there but they will not survive. Water was in the 70's.
For anyone planning a trip give it a couple of weeks after water temps go down. Its pretty disapointing with the amount of fight they give you right now.

Report: 9/1/05 Salmon River "High Water" Pictures from Wed.
Pictures taken yesterday at 3pm. Water was chocolate Brown and the state was putting up poster's warning people to stay away. Looks like it was around 2,500- 3,000 cfs including run-off. More today so I hear. The Altmar bridge had about 4-5 feet space between the water and the bottom of bridge. If it is around 6,000 cfs, then there is normally a 1-2 foot gap between the two with limited flooding in the parking lots and road ways .
