Water Conditions: 300+

Report: fished hard and hooked little sun, mon & tues. from DSR to altmar, fish just not there yet in numbers. Altmar and upper fly zone had the most fish and the most fishermen.
It looked like we would catch the start of the run on wed. morning in the ripples below the black hole, hooked 9 by 8:30am, some pretty fresh looking, but only hooked 5 more by noon then we got out of town.
Looks like next week it may pop if the lower temps cool the water.

Report: JUST RETURNED FROM THE SALMON FISHED 4 DAYS THERE ARE NO FISH TO SPEEK OF IN THE LOWER RIVER INCLUDING THE DSR. WE FISHED HARD ONLY SAW ONE HOOK-UP. IF YOU LIKE TO FISH SIDE BY SIDE AND GET A FEW GO TO ALTMAR AT THE BRIDGE. THESE FISH ARE ALREADY VERY DARK BUT STILL FULL OF PISS AND VINIGAR. I DID SOME RESEARCH THE MAIN RUN IS STILL IN THE LAKE BUT NOT AT THE MOUTH OF THE SALMON. THE WATER TEMP. IS STILL TO HIGH. WHAT I WOULD SUGGEST CALL UP THERE DAILY AND WHEN YOU GET THE WORD "FISH ARE IN" IT WILL BE AN AWESOME RUN. SEE YA UP THERE.

Report: we had 6 guys I went 3 for 14, i fish hard, dark to dark and cover ground. my crew 5 other are their to relax and catch a few if the run is good. well they went 0-3,2-4 and the other 3 0-0.

great time hanging out but fishing was poor. but its more about the time away.

DEC give good waders and equipment to their guys. Saw then on the water 3 of 4 days. My nice and polite to me. just doing their job. its the ones that make the laws that need to be spoken to.

Report: Big Tom - You sound disappointed, and I can relate to that. We all have bad days on the SR, and get frustrated with crowded conditions and unsportsmanlike behavior. But don't blame the DEC and the DSR. The DEC ENCONs are doing their job, enforcing laws made with input from concerned citizens, business owners, and sportsmen. DSR provides a fisherman friendly "snagger free zone" which many people happily pay $20 for. The best that these people deal are sleep-deprived, salmon crazy lunatics. The worst that they deal with are willful lawbreakers, snaggers, vandals, and troublemakers.. I appreciate the job that they do and am glad they are there.

Report: We fished all three days. Found few fish. Went 3 for 15. More Encon then fish. Had seen many people ticketed for minor things. Could not belive the number of people there this early, and all of them in the DEC hole(tressle). The only place holding any number of fish is the upper fly. People still paying the $20 of bribe money to DSR to not see a fish, and to be harrased by the Jr boy scout leauge(DSR securtiy). DSR guides were bringing people to the fly zones. althought the water in the river is higher than the past few years the fish are still holding in the lake waiting for the water to cool. If your willing to go and waste gas, be haressed by DEC, get tangled with the 10 guys on the oppisite side, and watch as the river drys up(thanks Reliant Energy), well go on up and bring lots of money cause DEC need some more!!!! Have fun and FISH ON!!!!

Report: Basically there are a few words that can sum up this weekend.... slow, terrible, difficult, and frustrating. It was slow going for whole weekend.... hooked 3 on sat, and 6 on sunday.
Sunday was all in schoolhouse area right above bridge, nothing doing in lower section of river.
Overall very, very slow and for average fisherman a definate skunk....
I did far better than most and still felt it to be slow.

Report: Not a good weekend, out of 5 of us 3 fish were landed with 6 hookups.(There were more anglers than fish.) I believe they are raising the water tonight, but it may take more than that. Jay hit the lake late Friday afternoon and didn't see much at all and I checked out the Rt. 3 bridge and saw nothing. I heard there are tons of salmon in the Oswego, but it's elbow to elbow. We hit fish in the paper hole and lower black, Pineville had fish Friday and they were in the school house Saturday morning. There are some crazy stories on the river, the worst one was a guy getting a $150 fine for a 49 inch leader, one inch over! so don't ruin your time on the river.

Report: Fished 1/2 day Friday, full day Saturday and Sunday morning. Nothing going on at all. Only fish being caught was up in Altmar. If you just want to catch you could go elbow to elbow at any one of the pools. No fresh runs were seen or spoken of. We hit every major and minor spot and were skunked. Any known hole was crowed and not worth pursueing. River was last reported running at 335cfps. The need of higher water and colder weather will be a factor on any runs occuring.

Report: Salmon River Fishing Report:
Monday-
Slow day for freshies down low, played with a few in am.
A slow trickle of fish came in.
Went up river, fish scattered and played with 4-5. Over all slow day for
most, but not all, with a few hook-ups. Had to work for them. Beautiful day
in the 70's and sunny.

Until MIDNIGHT Sun SEP 26, 335 CFS
-
Current Pineville flow - 417cfs approx. (Give or take)
-
Tuesday: We worked the lower end hoping for some freshies. (Heard
there was a push last night.) My guest's decided to roll the dice after yesterday
and try again. Mother nature provided us with very - very few. Less than
yesterday. Most angler's I saw unfortunately had little luck, I saw 2 angler's
hook-up all day (Im sure there were more) and one of those was my guest for
the day. Today was not a total loss as we worked about 10 - 11 different
current break, depression's. My guest was treated to knowledge of about 2 miles of prime
Salmon - Steelhead holding water's to come back to on his own and fish. Once
this knowledge of holding water is achieved, you are set for life and a guide
is no longer needed. (This is my goal to you, self-sufficiency, so you won't
need me. Instruction and teaching is something I enjoy doing each and every
day happily)

Any day now we should start to see better push's of fresh fish, it is just a matter of when.

Below is just a sampling of a few "of a larger number" of fish we enjoyed playing with over the entire week. Finally got my mo-jo work'n!

Father and son enjoying a spectacular day of Salmon River King Fishing this week

Wednesday: Decided to not fish the lower end after 2 slow days in a row, so we fished mid and high. Found a fair number of happy fish to play with.
Heard that the fish in the Lake are in approx. 30 feet of water and moving closer to the river mouth almost daily. The last 2 weeks have all been sunny and warm. Not the best weather to increase the odds for the fish to run. Sooner or later there biological clock will make them run in heck or high water. Guaranteed!
Sooooo, any day now we should start to see some nice fresh run's. MMMMM, where is that crystal ball of mine?
-
Thursday:
Decided to play in a different area today with the lower end continuing to be slow. Heard through the grapevine that a few ran down low, but not many again. We hit the jack pot and found a very nice sized pod of Kings and 1 Brown to play with most of the day.
-
Friday:
Ditto Thursday's report. Except we got to play with even more Kings than the previous 2 days, believe it or not!

Hello, I am looking to get a NY Fishing License up in Pulaski, NY? either very late Saturday night or very early Sunday morning. Do you know of any place open during those wee hours? Thanks ! Ed
-
Fishing Licenses:
If you are in need of a N.Y. State fishing license and you want to avoid waiting in long lines, Here is a very helpful tip. If you are traveling north on I-81 to get to Pulaski, you can exit at Central Square, (I-81 exit 32). At the ramp, turn right. Go down the little hill and it's the 1st gas station on left "Mobil" sells licenses. They are open 24 hrs and it's an easy off easy in and out stop.

The DEC now allows you to order your fishing license over the phone. These take at least 10 days to receive. If you won't be able to pick a fishing license before our meeting time, then I would recommend going this route.
? By phone* at 1-86-NY-DECALS (1-866-933-2257) or ? by mail to: WorldCom, P.O. Box 36985, Phoenix AZ 85067-6985 http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/seasons/foe4clic.html

Last option would be the Portly Angler. I've never done it. But I'm told they have someone at the hotel front desk all night. And they sell licenses.
Most tackle - fly shops open around 5 am presently.

Nice lil Coho that fought just like a Steelhead. Amazing amount of strength and tenacity for what we consider a small one on this river. :)

Where are the fish---it is the end of September. I was seeing and hooking more fish the last week of August than I am now. Do you have a professional opinion? Tight lines. Dave

I know exactly where they are at Dave. They are in the water.
Actually they are very -very shallow in the lake and things should return to normal shortly.
Heard the Estuary is starting to fill back up again, so its just a matter of time.
Best, Randy

King Salmon were the predominant flavor of the week. Nice looking.
I have yet to see any older (half dead) Salmon around or any beds.
This tells you that the majority are still in the holes, pairing up
and not many over the gravel yet.

Report: Ok, someone wanted tips... Travel light and keep it simple.. This is how I rig up.. Upper river main line: 10lb or 12lb test depending on the water flow (Maxima ultra green).. Weight, start with 2 #5's, stay with #5 split shots to be consistant with your drifts up there. If you always use #5's you'll always know what the bottom feels like an it easier to judge wheather you need to add or remove weight. You gotta be on the bottom... Then, I tie on a small black barrel swivel followed by the leader.. Always Maxima Chameleon 8lb or 10lb test depending on my main line. (4 feet and why risk it... D'Oh!) The bottom of the river is brown for the most part, but take a fish eye's view.. You're on the bottom, looking up hill in any current or the head of a pool and what are you seeing? brown... OK, now it time to select a hook, I use Mustard 2x strong #8(pre-season) and #6(main-run) straight eye tied with a snell knot, this minimizes snags.. Bare hook? get some small rubber eggs in every color, they're cheap or red and black spunge.
Don't go crazy with the spunge, you don't need much.. I use to tie tons of flies for salmon which is being limited to stealies and browns only. Lower river, I fish the fast water only and go up on line and weight size because these are quick drifts. It not worth carring a ton of gear out there, check the water flow, select your line and carry plenty of weights, swivels, leader line, hooks, eggs/sponge, something to drink/snack on and leave the rest in the truck.. Have a great time...

Report: The below is Steve's fishing report from this past week and below that is mine. Combine the two and you will know as much as anyone! (Unless something has changed today, which I dont think it has from what I've seen and heard)
--
Randy.....
Just want you to know your reports are dead accurate.....I was up there Sat through Wed this past week....big pod came through Saturday with the 2400cfs of water (Pineville Guage)......some anglers had a field day in the ------ and ------ (we were just watching and brought our cameras)....that Pod of fish worked up through Ball Park Sunday and eventually was up into the Sportsman to the Trestle Tues/Wed.....Lots of Hook-ups...though the action slowed some Wednesday....Tuesday was red hot.....

We fished hard in the lower end Sun/Mon.....few fish here in there....not much movement though hard to see in the higher water (750-1000cfs). Saw a half dozen fish landed had a few on......we worked our way up to follow that big Pod..... we tried just above the -------- in the fast water and had 5 good hook-ups and landed a nice 12" brown.....thuoght it was a chub on a 9 wt......Wooley Buggers were the fly of the day Tuesday eveing....they would not touch an egg imitation....but hammered the bugger and then off to the races into the main pool. Needless to say, none came to the net in that fast water but it was fun for the first trip.

I was talking to two Charter boat Captains Sunday night (My Brother in Law is one)......They hammered fish Thu/Fri ----------/mouth....then it shut right off Saturday...they figured all the fish ran the river....and we know they did.

Had a couple of friends who continued to fish the lower river Wed/Thu.....not much to report, then you already know that...a few fish here and there, very scattered and not much running the river yet.....

Waiting for them to reload at the mouth....my next trip will be for the whole last week of Sept and first 5 days of October....looks like it will be a "normal" run timing wise this year.......I went up early to try to time that first run...which I did but Hurricane Frances had the last laugh.....figures the weather would mess me up....
Steve

Hi Steve,
It makes me happy that you had an enjoyable time while you were up here.
Thanks very much for the report and pics.
Yup, glad you found the same thing I did. You could not have had a more accurate read on the conditions.
Having your friends in the business and friends fishing different parts of the river is a big help in having a rock solid understanding of whats going on.
Best Fishs,
Randy Jones

9/18 - Salmon River Fishing Report:
I recieved 1,924 individual hit's on my "fishing reports" page on Wed. Wow, maybe a new record, this early. I feel guilty for not posting everyday. But time grows shorter as my work days and age grow longer. Being married now, has seemed to cut into my "Fish Reporting" time. Time to get out your violins :)

Nothing much new to report. The below reports pretty much sum it all up. Fishing overall has slowed a bit in most areas, but not all. Having to work for the fish that are around. On this river things can and do change in a day or two, so you never know.

This last week I've done what most other angler's have done. Fished high and low. Wade and drift boat. Saw one pod of about 30 on Thursday off the boat and saw a presence of fish most places we went. (Had reports of thousands of fish being spotted by my guide friends off their drift boats on Monday when the water dropped. All in one particular stretch of river. These Kings came in with the last high water as previously reported to you earlier in the week.) Just about every spot we stopped at you would either see one or two, three. See several roll or splash the surface. So again there was a presence of fish, which kept our lines in the water and were rewarded with the occasional pull. They are getting more spread out and not as condensed in one stretch of river as they were earlier in the week. Saw a fair number rolling on the surface over about an 1/8 mile stretch while in the boat. Fresh fish entering the river daily, just not a lot this past week. Enough to keep you interested, if you knew where they liked to hang out.

Fishing has slowed a lil for some, but not all. Fish have totally spread out top to bottom, deepest pools holding the most, but also the most anglers too. Still enough around that if you take a hike you can find some around and not feel crowded. (That's pretty much what we did all week. We put the quality of our fishing locations, (rarely fishing with many or ANY other anglers around) in front of standing in a long crowded line of anglers casting into the larger pool's feeling crowded )
It's still early and I could not be happier. Still a lot more fish to come. Since the fish are top to bottom this will help spread all the anglers out. Instead of everyone concentrating only on one area. The flood water's of last week conclusively brought in a ton (yes, I said a ton) of fresh fish. Again, these fish have moved up river and spread out through the entire river. The estuary slowed down this week. Should start to pick up soon.

I'm hearing reports of a lot of fish still being marked out on the lake by the Capt.'s working out there. Some are finding the salmon not hitting as good, recently. Seems as though they are going into more of their - run the river, spawning mode and moving in closer to shore, out in the lake.

Personally I found guiding this past week challenging. I hate challenging. I like it when everything falls into place nicely and the fish gods are good to all. Making the fishing nice and easy with not much guess work involved. This past week I did my best, but seamed to zig when I should have zagged. Mother Nature is probably laughing her head off at me for trying to stay on top of some of the changes that happened so fast this past week. We had to work for all of our fish this past week and none seemed to come easy to us. Some folks I know did pretty darn well though. With higher water levels and the freshness of these fish it made it more challenging to land them. (But fun!)

I'm thankful to have some good friends that are in the fish business and mostly guides who work everyday over the entire river, estuary, lake. Sharing honest, truthful information on current conditions daily, that I can share with all of you.

Tight to another King off the drift boat while fishing the Salmon River this week. Tuff to land in the higher water. Had it close a couple of times giving me a couple of split second shots at it with the net. But with low trees all over - around us and fast currents on this particular corner, it made it tuff to chase and bring to shore. The fish finally won by breaking us off. But not before we had sever

Report: Yesterday (Sunday) we had a slow to ok trickle of fish move through the lower end until about mid-morning for us. Just enough to keep it interesting. Then it died out for us and most other's around too. Everyone within eye sight hooked up to at least one, with a few hooking more than that. Landing was another story with over 1,000 cfs. My guest's did manage to lose some, but land 1 for the dinner table. Congrats! (Getting lazy, no photo, :)

Yup, what some of have heard is correct. Through several very credible sources who saw, viewed, witnessed with their own eyes, yes, there was a LARGE number of fresh Kings, Coho that ran during the last high water period. They are spread out, mid to upper river should be smokin this week as they continue there migration up river. Larger holes hold'n good also. Expect some to run the lower end daily.

Things look good for water levels to be either maintained at a gate for the rest of the week or possibly dropped. (Either way is good for anyone and everyone.) Probably would depend on what track the next hurricane is predicted to take and if they think it will hit us. (?) Where is that crystal ball of mine?

Until MIDNIGHT today, Mon, 750 CFS
-
Current reel-Time flow 994 cfs -plus R-O at Pinneville. In 2 hours it has dropped to 977 cfs plus run-off.

Please be careful out there. Saw some stuff over the weekend that was pretty scary concerning anglers falling in, in the rapids.

Best Fish's,
Randy

Report:
A buddy of mine had never been to the Oak before and wanted me to show him around up there so off we left. Got down to the Oak and the water was a bit high and vis was about 12 inches at best. There were a few guys fishing and they had said that they had hooked up on a few fish but did not land any. well we left the Oak so I could show him some other local streams , grabbed lunch then headed back down to the Oak to give it a try. started fishing the over flow channel side and it was not long till I started seeing salmon trying to jump the falls. Not alot of fish but around every 15-20 minutes you would see a fish trying in vain to do so. Finaly hooked up with a king salmon and the fight was on but it did not last to long , one good jump and it shot downstream under a falen tree and it was over. Watched a few fish milling around in the shallow water off the turbine side but no takers there. continued to fish the over flow side and fish on again expected it to be anoughter king but was plesently surprised to see 28 1/2 in's of big male brown trout on my line. After a good battle and almost lossing it to the same fallen tree I was able to get the 10 3/4 lb brown to net. Was just my luck to forget my camera and had to settle for a driveway shot.

Report: 9/4 to 9/10 Salmon River Fishing Report with Prediction's:
Lower river report (for most but not all). Fri-Sat. dead slow. Sunday better,
Here is Monday's report from the DSR.
A better day with most of the action taking place in the morning. Small
numbers of fish are spread out in the lower part of the river.

I would agree 100% with it as I was there and saw few fish top to bottom (presence of fish throughout) with the average guy (with experience of habitat, rigging, etc...) hooking into 1-4 fish, few guys none.. Just enough fish to keep you interested , but not a lot.
Now take a holiday weekend, sunny, tons of boats in the estuary stirring the pot and add 100 guys in the river fishing. (I was actually surprised at the number of anglers after the last few days reports. I figured most would have tried elsewhere)

Now Tuesday take the same number of fish that ran today and add 8 guys total fishing for them. :) Presently there is a nice small push of fresh fish running the lower end this morning - Tuesday.

Now take the end of the week with some rain, dark, cloudy, windy days. Maybe a sudden rise in water level?
You guessed it. :)
I'd forecast the fishing to slowly improve as the week progress's for freshies if I had to guess knowing what lil I do.

Report: Took an early exploratory run to the Salmon River saturday. A run from the prior high water did not materialize. Started at the DSR, and saw no fresh fish moving up. The lot there was no more than 1/4 full, and many were leaving by late morning as we did. Saw a few anglers hook up, but never saw a single fish landed or on a stringer. The flow in the DSR was strong but the water temp. was warm.

Later we tried above the Tressle Pool, and at the Paper Mill pool, and basically the story was the same. There are salmon in the river, but there are very few, and with temperatures reaching 80 and the bright sun over head, it was better conditions for the many kayaks coming down the river than for salmon fishing.

It was a good time to explore, but if you are looking to fish over a lot of fish, it was too early ... from all the boats around and at the lighthouse marina, it looked like the real numbers of fish are offshore still ....
