Report: They Pulled The Plug!

Well I always try to be positive, but here we are, looking at what could have been the best May in recent history for dropback steelheads, and they cut the water flow to the bare minimum. Unbelievable, is all any of us can say.

The creeks are still running the reservoir is full and there is even snow left on the hill. Everyone is asking: Why OH Why did they do this?

Sorry guys, I have no idea what is going on. What surprises me even more is now that there is no water, people come out of the woodwork. Everyone playing Pokeman, walkng around with their I spot um, I got um glasses. What a shame the whippers are now the ones that are going to get, (not catch) the fish.

OK,on to the report. We struggled today manging to catch only two, but one was a huge hen. We took one on a plug and the other on a blue egg sac. We saw dozens of fish running for cover doing their best to stay on the now dried up spawn bed. Look for fish to be droppiong back fast. Fish the head and tails of the pools. Wear dark clothes and move slow. The fish are real spooky now.

The lake is on fire. Catches of 20 to 30 browns/trip are being reported, from Oswego west to Sodus Bay. There have been a few salmon and dropback steelhead mixed in. Fish close to shore and look for warm water. Run Smithwicks in Black and Silver and Black/silver/orange belly. Use florocarbon leaders in 6 to 8 pound test. Troll 1.8 to 2.2 and look for bait and birds working the bait pods.

Sorry for the bad news on the water flows. If I learn anything, I will pass it on. Go Get Um, Troy

Report: The time is now!

This has been a real interesting week. Kind of like the whole winter has been. We have seen temps go to 80, back to 20 and rebound back to 60. The winds blew west, then north to 30 knots. Then swung around to the southeast and really cranked for two days. Now it is warm and humid. Why a fish would even think of biting, simply amazes me. But they are.

Thanks to the wind, I never did make it to the lake on Friday. The river went back to 2500 so we toughed it our here and managed to boat only one nice fish.

Today, we put in early and hit three fish in the first three spots we fished. What a way to start! We got a few showers and it was damp early and my old boys just didn't want to be out there. So we went away and I came home early. A easy day, but I would have prefered to stay and fish.

The lake is RED HOT, with great catches of browns coming from the creek mouths between Oswego and the Salmon River. It looks like another banner year for Eastern Lake Ontario Brown Trout Stay Tuned. Troy.

The remainder of my river season is all booked. I do have days in May for browns on the the lake and for walleyes.

Report: 70 Degrees Today!!!!

I was unable to access my site yesterday, so here is the report for the weekend and today. The weekend as you probably know was real cold and the river looked like salmon season. Every part-time guide wannabee with a boat was slapping his oars in the water on Saturday. It was nothing less than a total Goon Fest! Needless to say I blanked for the day. One hit all day and that as they say, was that.

Sunday started out the same, but around noon, things changed. Everyone packed up and headed home, the waters quieted down and the fish began to attach themselves to our lines. By days end we were 3 for 5 and Tom and Patty went home happy. (See pictures).

Today we finally had a real nice spring day with sun and temps pushing 70!! We fished hard all day and went 3 for 3. (See pictures). Eric and Richard hung tough and took in the great weather betweeen bites. We caught one at 6:15AM, one at 1:00 and tha last one at 3:00. You never know. Just keep fishing. Things will just improve every day as water temps slowly warm into the 40's

The river is down to a real clear 700 cfs. They are doing a real good job managing the water this year. when it finally warms up the river will rise again, but I think the big floods are behind us.

The lake is staring to turn on, with respectable catches of browns coming from the creek mouths between Oswego and the Salmon River. This fishery will get real hot as the near shore temps start to rise. Stay Tuned. Troy.

Report: A couple of young fellows fished with me today. Aaron and Georege 81 and 82 years young, have beeen fishing with me as long as I have been guiding. It was another cold morning so we fired up the heater and headed downstream from Altmar. It was close to 10:00 when we toook our first hit and we followed up with two more after that. 3 for 3 and the boys went home with fish. (See pictures).

The river is back down to a real fishable 700 cfs. They are doing a real good job managing the water this year. when it finally warms up the river will rise again, but i think the big floods are behind us. The Oswego on the other hand is HUGE! Running at a 2003 high of 22,0000 cfs!

The hatchery, raceway and Beaver Dam Brook is choked with hundreds of fish. They will come down and bite, but it will probably be in May. Stay Tuned and Go Get Um! I do have May 7, 8 and 12 still open. I guarantee that these will be good days. Troy

Report: Global Warming My Ass!!

Well, My power is finally back on, after a three day ordeal. Thank god for a good generator. We were real lucky, there are still a lot of folks with no heat or water yet. So now I can bring everyone up to date. Friday was a cold icy nasty day, but Rob and Beth hung tough and huddled around the heater. We fished hard and long and their landing ratio was stellar, as we went 3 for 3. 1 nice steehead and 1 brown. "See pictures" we fished altmar to poineville one time and fished everything real slow. all in all a good day, as we only heard of one other fish caught all day.

Saturday was much warmer in the am, but the winds were howling. My crew having just driven through this mess, were reluctant to head out into it. I really didn't push the issue as it was snotty, but I sure could have used the days pay. so we opted to abort and I home pennyless.

Sunday. I had three boys from New Hampshire on a bank trip. We headed out at dawn only to sit on the bank and watch the sun rise, as the slush was so thick, I couldn't get an egg sac through it. 2 1/2 hours later, we could finaaly fish as the temps climbed into the mid 20's. Global Warming, "remember". We fished hard, late into the day andcame away 1 for 5. "See pictures" Even in the ice water, the fish, blew the hole and cut us off on shelf ice. Did I say Global warming? It was a sunny day but with a stiff wind. we sdaw two other fish caught, but that was it. it appears the salmon river came down more today, but it is so cold that things will stay togh until it warms up.

You see in the dead of winter the water is a constant 33 to 36 degrees as it comes out of the reservoir. The water had actually warmed to 37 , but now it had dropped to 32.1 and the trout don't like it!

That's the best I can you. The fish are here. The hatchery, raceway and Beaver Dam Brook is choked with hundreds of fish. Maybe even several thousand. They will come down and bite, but it will probably be in May. Stay Tuned and Go Get Um! I do have May 5, 6, 7, 8 and 12 still open. I guarantee that these will be good days. Troy
