Report: What a great day for steelhead fishing !!! I brought 3 friends out Tom, Johm M. and Chris, for an afternoon of fun on the salmon. To our delight, the water conditions were very favorable. The sky was gray and overcast all day, but we paid it no mind. Early in the morning we saw a few fish in the deepest pockets, I hooked one briefly, and missed the set. Tom's birthday was today, and his leaking waders were casing some concern, so we headed back. We continued to fish the way back, but John M. wasn't paying much attention, as he and Chris traversed the bank of the river. John M had walked about 10yds away from a 7lb steelie and failed to see the flash of her silver sides. I came upon her hold and introduced her to a #10 black stonefly, to which she responded with a sharp flash and bite. I set the fly into her mouth with a sudden jerk of my noodlerod to the sky. The set was good, and the violent struggle that ensued was witnessed by Tom, who hadnt seen a steelie battled in the confines of the river. This fish was quite lively and decided to run hard into the brush pile, which had given it the confidence to hold where it had just moments before. I yelled, " Johnny!!!! Johnny !!!!! I NEED THE NET!!!". Johnny had walked all the way to the car. I was in water up to my thigh, and the riverbank was four feet high. So I had to hand land this one alone, in the water, with my gloves on. Good thing this fish was relatively small, but it was incredibly beautiful. Yet another memorable Monday on the playground of the steelhead. Thanks to the DEC, and their effort, and dedication to NY's fisheries.

Report: Another monday/tuesday to myself on the best water I could hope for. 2 on 1 in up north on the sandies for monday. The one I landed was no more than 6 lbs, he took a red stonefly on his second attempt. On tuesday 2 on 1 in on salmon, this one was at least 12 lbs, it hit a large stonefly dead drifted under a submerged log. What a fight !!!!!!!!! I always go out with a 10 1/2' cortland noodle rod with 6# cortland camo. This makes for an interesting fight, full of action. Each of these fish struck fiercely and fought with might, both fish were photographed, revived and released ASAP. I'm still smiling 6 hours later :)

Report: Fished School House for two hours on Thursday afternoon with no luck. Started out at School House on Friday morning, then went up by the Altmar Bridge, down to Pineville and even hit the Ball Park area all with no luck. Went back to School House for the last two hours and had one hit there but failed to hook up. Saturday started off at about 2 above zero, fished the lower section until noon and caught two small rainbows. Got a spot in the mid section and was hooked up in no time, ended up with seven on and four landed before leaving at 2:30 for the long ride home. All my action was on flies, fish ranged from three to eight pounds, all fish releast. Hope to make at least one more trip the first weekend of April.

Report: Over all, I would say the fishing was poor for this time of year. Normally, fish would be stacked in the deep pools below the spawning areas. Some of locals told us the steelies that were in the river from November are now at the hatchery or have already spawned and moved out.
Once the mouth of the river clears out of ice and slush the river should pick up. Here's how we did, three of us hit the river Friday at 3pm and targeted Ellis Cove. Tons of little brownies from 6 to 12 inches long. Saturday morning we split up, one to the School House, two back to Ellis Cove. Jay went 2 for 0 at the School House and nothing moved into Ellis, just those little brownies again. Went to Pineville, nothing there. All of us hit the School house in the afternoon, I went 1 for 1, Jay went 1 for 0 and Joe couldn't catch a cold.
