Report: Where are the salmon river steelhead? I am getting e-mails, phone calls, guys asking on the water. Where are the fish? It has been tough sledding the last week. The creeks are fishing OK and the Oswego has good numbers of browns, but the SR is slow. Sure we have a few super days and then you struggle. Like today we only hit one fish all day and it didn't stick.March can be brutal, especially with changing weather and water flows.

So, One more time. For over 15 years the Hatchery at Altmar has been taking the eggs from fish that return to the river in Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb. Early run fish. Over this 15 plus year period, we have produced a mutant strain of steelhead that all run early.Wake up guys! The SR doesn't get a big Spring run anymore. Even on banner years, 90% of the fish are in the river by March 1. You can take that to the bank.

You get good pushes throughout the winter but with any high water, they speed to the upper river and lay in the closed water of Beaver Dam Brook and the upper fly zone.

We have great fishing from Nov till March. Then you have to wait for them to come back down in April and May. Yes May! I say it every year. May is the best Steelhead fishing PERIOD! Yes, they are spawned out and thin, but they bite everything. They chase, they jump. It is what steelhead fishing is all about Combine a hungry trout and 45 to 50 degree water, and you have the makings of some Red Hot Fishing!

I hate to give you all the good news, but that is how it is. don't like it. Come to the State of the Lake Meeting this Wednesday March 17 at the Mexico BOCES.

I want to thank all the attendees at our seminar this past weekend in Stockbridge Mass. It was a huge success and we had a good turnout. Remember we will be doing on the water seminars throughout the summer. Call for more details.

Stay Warm. Lot's of snow on the way!!

Report: While everyone is all excited about the recent warm up and beautiful flows and conditions. I heard a lot of whining the last four days.

Why aren't they biting, it is so nice out. shouldn't the water be warming up?

So many fail to realize that snow melt is the coldest water of the season. In addition to that, it is different water. Whether it is the PH or alkalinity, ot whatever, it shuts down the fish.

While the SR is running at a great flow of 1200 cfs with run off and I am sure fish are entering the river daily, things need to stabilize and then it will happen.

Similar conditions are prevelant on the Oswego which rose from 5,000 to 10,000 today. What this will do is attract the bait (emerald shiners, sticklebacks, alewifes) into the harbor which will pull in the first good run of fresh silver lake run brown trout.

I caught a few over there already in the past week, but look for a good push real soon.

The creeks are showing signs of breaking open but even when they do it will tough going with the shelf ice. Be Careful!

March is shaping up to be a good month and if we lose some of the snow now, we could avoid major flooding in the Spring. Time will tell.

Good Fishing

Report: 3/28/04 Saturday
floated from Altmar to Pineville nice day to be out, sunny, not much wind, air temps in upper 30s to low 40s. Fishing was tough, upper river was extremely crowded with both bank anglers and boats. We took a good skunk for the day. I did notice a couple anglers hooked up in lower fly zone while we launched, we also saw a boat anchored in Ellis hook a couple and then we saw someone in the Bovines hooked up. Possibly the most crowded I've ever seen the Salmon River in February.

Sunday 02/29/04
wade fished the lower river: staircase and then the glide, much less pressure down there than up top, no fish though - took another good skunk. At lease we got rid of Cabin fever !

Unfortunately Salmon River Steelheading is more about being at the right place at the right time than actually knowing how to fish.

Do you feel lucky ?

Report: I would like to hear some kind of report of what is going in the Salmon river and other places close to that. I am thinking about coming up and live several hours away. Wondering what is the deal up there. NO reports for quite a while
