Location: Salmon River
Water Conditions: Real High!

Report: The Salmon and Oswego are still completely blown out. Marty and Frank were up for another day of high water fishing so we toughed it out in the boat again today. Despite the 5,500cfs and run-off from the creeks we had a good time and enjoyed the ride. Wow what a ride! I told them no extra charge for the white water trip.

We floated Altmar to Pineville and caught one big male steelhead on a rapala, for two hours effort. The water was really dirty, so I sent them south around 9AM to watch SU beat Oklahoma.

I really do love high water. I just don't like the leaves and grass. With the colder temps, the water should slowly receed but the late week forecast is for more rain.

The big creeks continue to pump mud, but the little streams and ditches are choked with fish. The really are everywhere. I counted over twenty steelhead in a 1/4 mile stretch in a small feeder stream. Hopefully the whippers won't find them and yank them out.

I here Maxwell is a total zoo. Lot's of fish, but lot's of goons, with no law enforcement in site. What a shame.

Again, I am still betting the fishing will be Red Hot, right through May this year.

Report: The Salmon and Oswego are completely blown out. Hopefully things will settle down soon and I can get back in the boat.
The good news is that the small streams are Red Hot. The Sandy's are still high and muddy, but every other "Ditch" flowing into Lake O is choked with spawning trout.
I walked 7 tribs today and I saw fish in every one. To be honest, I don't really like fishing to them in the tiniest ditches, the brush is brutal. I now own another three piece as yet another rod tip went into the trees, but if that is the only option, you have to go for it.
We crawled on our hands and knees, and snuck up on them from above, We floated big nightcrawlers and minnows down into there spawning areas and most fish immediately attacked the baits! Especially the large pike minnows. They must think it is raiding their nests to get the eggs. At any rate I quit counting the number of fish I saw today. I will be back on the tribs in the am doing battle with more chrome.
Go Get Um!

Water Conditions: High and colored

Report:

Down and dirty is the game right now. March run-off is the coldest water of the year. While many think the water is warming, the fact is that the water is warmer in January & February when it comes off the bottom of the reservoir. Right now it is all snow melt 32.1 degrees. Real ice water!
This will makes things tough at times. You really have to slow down and fish deep.

Anyway, I spent a gorgeous day on the Salmon River with Brian Mulkeen and his youngest son Eric. Brian Jr. wasn't able to make this one, but we saved him a few for their next trip in May. We fished Altmar to Pineville, twice. The water below Orwell is real dirty.

The good news is that we went 4 for 7. The bad news is that they were all small brown trout and one real small steelhead. Our only mature fish beat us bad at the net as we chased it several hundred yards. We did get several real good looks at it and it was well into the high teens. Twenty?? Maybe. We will never know. "All fish were Released"

We caught all our fish on chartreuse eggs.

The salmon river is running 2000cfs, but there is alot of run-off and it is ICE COLD AND DIRTY!

The Oswego is running super high, about 19000 cfs as I am writng this. Anything over 10,000 is tough fishing.
Better days ahead. There is a lot of fish, but these conditions will try everyones patience. Hang tough.

I still have some prime openings in April. So give us a call.
Go get-um.

Report: updated: Monday, March 24, 2003
ATTENTION: Free water flow schedule for Salmon River: 1-800-452-1742, CODE - 365123
Fishing Conditions: High water has brought very difficult fishing conditions early on in the week. Diversions out of Ellis Cove as well as below Pineville are producing some fish although fish are not heavily on beds and these areas are primarily gravel areas where fish will be found more prevalently on redds in another week to 10 days. Creeks are very high throughout the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, but the drainage west of Pulaski is not Tug Hill and will recede fairly quickly. Eggs, egg patterns, and spring wigglers will bring your best shot for success.
Water Flow: 2,000 cfs until midnight Friday March 28
Water Temp: 36 degrees

Report: Fishing has been a little tough the last couple of days, due to the severe low weather temperatures. We've got an excellent break in the weather this week throughout the weekend - there are good numbers of fish. Thin black stoneflies in size 12 are climbing up the banks in military order! Not a lot of fish are on gravel yet - stick to slower moving pools. (Classic winter holding pools)
