Report: You guys are smart, not posting reports and revealing spots. In Erie, our website has people coming up from every where. They tell where they caught them and on what. Where is the skill in that they have both vital pieces of info. Tired of the ERie tribs looking like a circus. THey should take this site advice.

Report: Friends fishing reports from recent outing's . A must read

Randy:Fishing journal entry from my trip yesterday. Thursday - Didn't see you there...guess you were with the Kings.Les Flow about 300 CFS with clouds and some sun later in the day. Met Shane from work and we headed down under cover of darkness. A couple of bad omens regarding the magnitude of the salmon run were that 1) we didn't spook one king on the way across the river and 2) Randy was not set up in the Hole. Started fishing at legal and hooked a king in the tail of the run within the first 10 minutes of casting by swinging a #6 purple bugger. Shane hooked one in the head of the run that blew the hole. Then this old dude shows up. No one is fishing anywhere else in sight (including the -- Hole and the -- Hole)!! I couldn't believe that this guy was gonna crowd in...but he did. When Shane returned I suggested he head up to the -- (no one was fishing it!!!). The salmon run was slow (not what I expected for this time of year) but there were fish there. I headed up to the -- and positioned myself on the North side with Shane opposite me. When I arrived he had already had a take or two. I put on a large (#4 or #6) fully dressed fuchsia wooly bugger and start covering the hole on the swing. When I get down to the tail I feel a bump then all hell breaks loose. Fish runs down river and I land the 32 inch (18 inch) girth chrome beauty. This is one of the nicest fish I've ever caught. About a 13/14 lb chromer on the swing with a large streamer. Shane was positioned well over a king holding spot and hooked up a bunch of times, landing a few kings. From my angle, I was doing better on the steel and confirmed hooked four steel total with two landed. The second one landed (29 inch with 15 inch girth...8 or 9 pounds) gave the most memorable fight....running directly up-river at a ballistic pace before I was able to land it. These fish were incredible, the way they can only fight in the fall...pure silver....and the two I lost totally smoked me on down-river runs...these fish were hooked on salmon rigs...nine weight rod with 12 pound tippet...and they still couldn't be stopped. I also landed a beautiful 4 pound brown that was foul-hooked under the jaw...and Shane landed a really nice 6/7 pound brown that fought like mad. Shane had never hooked a steelhead and his time came about mid day...he hooked a beautiful 10 pounder and was able to land it...awesome. In general, chartreuse and orange got the most takes during the day.>
> The fishing was good. Not quite what I had expected regarding the kings and you had to work for every hook-up. The steelhead fishing was outstanding. Pressure on this secton of river was very minimal. A few guys here and there. I'm sure most folks were elsewhere...(Names of holes, runs, places fished have been edited out at the request of the writer. I agree.)

Hello mr. jones.
Just want to say i love your web site, very accurate. Just came back from a two day trip, tues and wed, and the fishing was great, fish everywhere. My dad and I had on so many fish we lost count, only landed a couple but just to fight a salmon is unbelievable. This was definitly the best trip ive ever had. Just wanted to say thanks on the good information you post on your website.
thanks
dave

Hi Randy, .
I had a couple of great days on the river last week, and your advice really helped. I spent most of my time at the lower end of the river, and managed to land quite a few nice salmon, as well as execute some entertaining LDR's on many more. Two of which involved a brief swim on my part, even with the korkers! Based on one of your past posts, I targeted the riffles and smaller pools between the big, popular pools, and as such had lots of water to myself, and was able to sight fish very effectively. Hell of a lot of fun. Best fly for the kings was an orange estatz bugger - if I got a good drift and put it near them, they would often hit it. Many of these I could see clearly enough to dispel the lifting myth as well - no doubt that they were actively hitting the fly. Why - who knows - but they certainly took it.

Had enough success with the salmon that I decided to hit the deeper pools my last afternoon in search of steelhead, and was rewarded with two big fish on, one landed. Wow what hot fish, and beautiful. Am really looking forward to learning more about chasing steelhead from you next week.

I'm very happy for all of you. Sounds like you all had a memorable experience on the river where memories are made. Congrats!!

Report: Fished Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning at the Salmon. Thursday in the DSR was mostly slow with few fish moving up and light crowds. If you could find a pod of fish holding in a deeper pocket, you could do ok. They were hitting well on Thursday. Friday was even slower in the DSR, with even less fish on the move and a very slow bite. Later we went to the lower fly zone. There were loads of fish there; some fresh but many spawning. The spawning fish were mostly off the bite. Some but not all of the fish up there are in various states of decay. Many more people were fishing up in the fly zone and just below it.

The rains Friday did not produce any significant run on Saturday in the DSR, but as the morning wore on there did seem to be somewhat more fish. The water level was up a bit from the rain. There was a bigger crowd in the DSR Saturday, especially in the area of the upper stairs. Many were fishing in the fastest water and doing pretty well although few fish were moving through the slow water.

Report: Elbow to elbow action, caught plenty kings one steel, lost count how many times I was almost knocked on my ass by salmon working up stream, plenty of action on fly , numbers seem greater every year, DEP much in evidence yet still see too many people snagging and foul hooking, also playing fish for far too long and then dumping them back without any aid to rescuscitate, poor form guys !!! If this continues to be as attractive then people need to pay a little more respect to the fish primarily and secondly the area. Will return in a few weeks for some steelhead hopefully less crowded.

Report: Sunday and Monday was awesome in the lower end, fish were everywhere! My brother picked up a 29 inch male brown in full color, very nice fish. The rest of the week was ok for the most part. Plenty of hookups and tons of fishermen.. There's definatly an increase of fishermen on the river, even mid-week. The upper and lower ends of the river is getting pounded by people, parking lots are full and groups of fishermen are guarding holes like salmon on a nest. Still seeing folks ripping the holes with 20lb+ line and keeping foul hooked fish and mud-sharks. Another big run came in Sunday, so the entire river should be good.

Green and orange estaz imitation eggs seem to be working well, along with stone flies

Report: The previous post warrants a response. Several misstatements of fact were made that I would like to correct.

1. In New York, its the DEC, not the DEP. Fisheries and wildlife is part of the DEC.

2. The state makes no secret that fish returns are lower now than in the past.

3. The reason for the lower returns is not too many anglers keeping fish, its because of changes to the Lake Ontario ecosystem - zebra and quagga mussels, round goby, clearing the water, removing phytoplankton, and reducing populations of baitfish upon which the salmon feed.

4. License fees cover only a small fraction of what is spent each year in NY to maintain the hatcheries, stock fish, do the necessary surveying and science to maintain as healthy a fishery as possible.

5. Reliant Energy should be congratulated for improvements to its water flow practices which are now much more favorable for natural reproduction in the river and support a year-round fishery, whereas in the past it did not. Did you know that wild reproduction of chinook salmon is now 60,000/year?

And may I remind everyone that there is a separate discussion board for things like this. This forum is supposed to be about fishing reports.

Tight lines, SS

Report: it should be no suprise to everyone, seeing the amount of people on the river increasing every year, that fish populations are dwindling year to year...the dep and fish and wildlife will not tell you that it is getting worse because they want license sales....catch and release is the only way to go, it makes sense that the more fish that survive to spawn, the more there will be in the future...support more catch and release areas, and if nothing else smaller daily limits....get your pictures and get those fish back in the water quickly....don't keep hens.....common sense preservation of the one thing that keeps fishing possible, fish.....and don't forget to tell reliant energy what you think of their water use practices, screwing with the flows of the river.....

Report: Fishing was slow Thursday,Friday, and Saturday. My buddy and I landed three salmon out of ten hookups. After a little rain and colder temps Sunday produced the best day of fishing in our lives. We landed thirty and had about sixty hookups. There always seems to be a handful of guys catching fish with everyone else wondering how are they doing it."Secret's in the yellow sponge."All joking aside we had a great time as well as the couple hundred guys around us.Suprisingly three out of four fish were legal hooks. We both kept our limit, gave many away and returned many back to the water to swim again.I got as much gratification by releasing the salmon as I did keeping my limit.

Report: Fished the lower DSR Monday morning.. only saw a few fish. Nothing was running. The weekend run was not happening. After lunch, went to upper fly zone and hooked a hot, fresh coho.. some of the fish that came in on the weekend must have traveled up quickly.

My guess, still more to come in down low, and some hot fish to be found mid to upper river as well. If you can go now, go!

Report: Thursday the 30th started fishing at noon on the Lower fly stretch; several hookups with few landed fish, salmon are jumping and full of life and power. Each guy in our group averaged 10-15 hook ups easy. Fish turned on about an hour before dusk and didn't let up the acrobatics of the kings were amazing. Crowd was not too heavy in the lower fly area.

Friday the 1st led to fishing in the new upper fly area above the hatchery. Great area for fly, a lot of elbow room and some great drifts were to be had. Landed my first King, an easy 30 lbs. Hookups were several an hour with a lot of large kings landed.

Saturday the 2nd we hit the upper Douglaston, being the weekend there were a ton of guys. Hookups were few and far between, ended up leaving the area around noon to hit the lower fly area. The lower fly below the bridge was the place to be hookups by the minute. I landed 5 20+ lb kings and got to play out a dozen others, easily 20-30 solid hookups. My buddy landed another 5 and easily had the same number of hookups. A lot of overcast and a heavy shower did nothing to hamper the fishing at all. A lot of fish in the area, sever Coho’s were fought, a few steelheads and some small browns. This was easily the best day of fishing for our group on the river.

Sunday the 3rd was a bright sunny day. The rain on Saturday drove in a nice run of Coho’s with a lot of hookups in the lower fly. A few steelies were hooked, a few browns and several Kings.

A few tips,
The Browns are numerous in the river this year, take a few steps back and cast shallow for a good chance of a hook up.

Keep your rod tips low when fighting these salmon all! We watched half dozen rods sacrificed to the river.

Corkers, corkers, corkers.

Tight lines!

Report: Fished in the morning until approximately 11:30. Fishing in the DSR was very slow! Only had 3 fish on. Didn't see many hook-ups. The few fish we saw landed were small. My friend and I have been disappointed the last two years. We fish hard, cover a lot of water and don't see the kind of fishing it used to be. We wonder what's going on. DEC? Stocking? Nature?
Hope things get better!
