Randy:Fishing journal entry from my trip yesterday. Thursday - Didn't see you there...guess you were with the Kings.Les Flow about 300 CFS with clouds and some sun later in the day. Met Shane from work and we headed down under cover of darkness. A couple of bad omens regarding the magnitude of the salmon run were that 1) we didn't spook one king on the way across the river and 2) Randy was not set up in the Hole. Started fishing at legal and hooked a king in the tail of the run within the first 10 minutes of casting by swinging a #6 purple bugger. Shane hooked one in the head of the run that blew the hole. Then this old dude shows up. No one is fishing anywhere else in sight (including the -- Hole and the -- Hole)!! I couldn't believe that this guy was gonna crowd in...but he did. When Shane returned I suggested he head up to the -- (no one was fishing it!!!). The salmon run was slow (not what I expected for this time of year) but there were fish there. I headed up to the -- and positioned myself on the North side with Shane opposite me. When I arrived he had already had a take or two. I put on a large (#4 or #6) fully dressed fuchsia wooly bugger and start covering the hole on the swing. When I get down to the tail I feel a bump then all hell breaks loose. Fish runs down river and I land the 32 inch (18 inch) girth chrome beauty. This is one of the nicest fish I've ever caught. About a 13/14 lb chromer on the swing with a large streamer. Shane was positioned well over a king holding spot and hooked up a bunch of times, landing a few kings. From my angle, I was doing better on the steel and confirmed hooked four steel total with two landed. The second one landed (29 inch with 15 inch girth...8 or 9 pounds) gave the most memorable fight....running directly up-river at a ballistic pace before I was able to land it. These fish were incredible, the way they can only fight in the fall...pure silver....and the two I lost totally smoked me on down-river runs...these fish were hooked on salmon rigs...nine weight rod with 12 pound tippet...and they still couldn't be stopped. I also landed a beautiful 4 pound brown that was foul-hooked under the jaw...and Shane landed a really nice 6/7 pound brown that fought like mad. Shane had never hooked a steelhead and his time came about mid day...he hooked a beautiful 10 pounder and was able to land it...awesome. In general, chartreuse and orange got the most takes during the day.> > The fishing was good. Not quite what I had expected regarding the kings and you had to work for every hook-up. The steelhead fishing was outstanding. Pressure on this secton of river was very minimal. A few guys here and there. I'm sure most folks were elsewhere...(Names of holes, runs, places fished have been edited out at the request of the writer. I agree.) -
Hello mr. jones. Just want to say i love your web site, very accurate. Just came back from a two day trip, tues and wed, and the fishing was great, fish everywhere. My dad and I had on so many fish we lost count, only landed a couple but just to fight a salmon is unbelievable. This was definitly the best trip ive ever had. Just wanted to say thanks on the good information you post on your website. thanks dave - Hi Randy, . I had a couple of great days on the river last week, and your advice really helped. I spent most of my time at the lower end of the river, and managed to land quite a few nice salmon, as well as execute some entertaining LDR's on many more. Two of which involved a brief swim on my part, even with the korkers! Based on one of your past posts, I targeted the riffles and smaller pools between the big, popular pools, and as such had lots of water to myself, and was able to sight fish very effectively. Hell of a lot of fun. Best fly for the kings was an orange estatz bugger - if I got a good drift and put it near them, they would often hit it. Many of these I could see clearly enough to dispel the lifting myth as well - no doubt that they were actively hitting the fly. Why - who knows - but they certainly took it.
Had enough success with the salmon that I decided to hit the deeper pools my last afternoon in search of steelhead, and was rewarded with two big fish on, one landed. Wow what hot fish, and beautiful. Am really looking forward to learning more about chasing steelhead from you next week. Alan - I'm very happy for all of you. Sounds like you all had a memorable experience on the river where memories are made. Congrats!! Randy Jones
