Report: Jan. 27 Salmon River Report
Fish are top to bottom, few here and there with the gut and tail's of pools holding the largest numbers. Not many coming in now with all the ice, slush, anchor ice, shelf ice filling in the lower river shallow's. (I'm guessing that the river might be unfishable (frozen over) below the Josh hole.?) ) A lot came in with the last high water in Dec. These are spread through out the river. A friend of mine was out on Sunday and hit 6 steelhead. Most other's are not hitting this many. Hardly anyone is fishing due to weather. This morning it was -5 without any wind. Looks like starting on Wed. we will get back into some more comfortable fishing weather. If it warms up your best shot is the mid-lower river. It has not been fished in about 2 or weeks due to slush. Sssshhhhhh

Warning:
To any of you who are not used to fishing with shelf ice. Please make
sure you know how deep the water is underneath the ice before walking
out on it. I know of 2 people who put catching fish in front of there
own personal safety. They broke through the ice and slipped completely
under the water. Both were lucky and are still alive to talk about it.
With shelf ice, know how deep the water is underneath you. This type of
ice is from mid river down.

Also, when shelf ice does start to break up it is common to have sheets
floating down the river as big as your car. Keep an eye out for it.

All of the above is common at this time of the year, so please be
careful. Don't play games with Mother Nature, she always has the winning
hand.

Best Fish's,

Randy Jones

Report: My God is it Cold!!!

The coldest air we have seen in years is still hanging in there this week. The river is nothing but slush. Today the town pool was froze completely over. There is plenty of snow on the hill and this is good news for snowmobilers and for the spring, as we need that water to raise lake levels and prolong the May steelhead season. It looks like the end of the week may bring some fishable temps, but there will be a lot of shelf ice to contend with.

The ice fishing however is real good as hardy anglers have been pounding big perch on Sodus Bay, Blind Sodus Bay and in Fair Haven. Sndy Pond Fisherman are doing well on northerns and crappie as well as some perch. I don't have a current report on the Henderson area, but I am sure things are going well there too.

If you don't ice fish or snowmobile, this is a good time to catch up on things around the house and prepare your tackle for the next time we get a warming trend.

Report: Cold and Snow!!!!!!!!!!

We are getting pounded with heavy lake effect snow, high winds and cold temps this week. While we toughed it out and did OK over the weekend, temps are now plummeting and the river is turning to slush. There is over 60 inches of new snow on the hill but this is good news for snowmobilers and for the spring, as we need that water to raise lake levels and prolong the May steelhead season.

This is a good time to catch up on things around the house and prepare your tackle for the next time we get a warming trend.

Report: Good Winter Fishing!

The first week of January was real good with seasonal temps and plenty of fish. The Salmon and Oswego are both fishing good, with fresh fish throughout both rivers. The salmon river hot spots have been from the sportsman hole down to Rt 81. The Oswego has steelhead at the dam and lot's of browns in the Harbor. The Oswego is still real high, but it is dropping steadily. Look for this river to be Red Hot in a few days, unless of course the slush keeps us off of it. any time temps drop below 25 there will be slush on the small streams, Oswego and the lower salmon river.

All is quiet right now across the big lake. Snow is falling today and there is about 6 fresh inches in the yard. Temps are not real bad, but a brisk wind will make things interesting for the hardy angler. The lower river is producing a few fresh fish everyday. Blue and pink sacs and small jigs continue to be the top producers. Spend your time at the head and gut of the deep pools. Jigs and egg sacs should work best. Experiment with sizes from 8 to 14. Good luck.

Once again I will be participating in the State of the Lake meetings being held over the next few weeks with stakeholders and the DEC. Basically we will be discussing stocking levels, baitfish populations, the lake's ecosystem and the how tourism has been effected. I will keep everyone up to date on the results of our meetings.

I have just recently mailed out my Winter 2002 Newsletter. If you did not receive a copy and would like one, just e-mail me with your street address and I will drop one in the mail.
Good Fishing Troy.

Report: Jan. 6 Salmon River Report
Some Steelhead are bunched up in the holes due to the water dropping. This is normal and one of the many variables or clues you look for when planning a trip up here. Few fresh fish are trickling in the lower end on a daily basis. Some are on the move up river. Fish are top to bottom.

Have Fun!

Report: Fished the DSR on Sunday. It was slow going for me in the morning but saw some fish caught.Did some walking in the afternoon and fished a nice area without another angler in sight.I went down to a 3.3 lb leader and I had so many hook ups and break offs in about a 2 hour period that it was starting to become Comical.I did however manage to get 4 fish "almost" landed before breaking off, laughing at me and swimming away lol.I still had a great time though.I can't wait to go back and try again.
